J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge

J.N. "Ding" Darling offers a four-mile wildlife drive. Its a one-way trip through mangrove wetland and subtropical hammock habitat. You can drive, bicycle, hike, or take a narrated tram tour. The Drive starts at the Visitor & Education Center and ends on Sanibel-Captiva Road. The loop back to the Center is 8 miles total.

Along the way you can stop to explore trails and climb the Observation Tower overlooking the main bird-feeding area. Pull over on the right side of the road anywhere along the Drive to observe and photograph wildlife in the wetlands and vegetation. You can also fish and launch paddlecraft along Wildlife Drive.

Volunteer Rovers are often on hand to point out wildlife and answer questions. Look for Refuge signature birds, including the Roseate Spoonbill, Osprey, Reddish Egret, and Yellow-crowned Night Heron. More secretive birds like the Mangrove Cuckoo, Black-whiskered Vireo, and Indigo Bunting require some stealth and patience. If you’re lucky, a River Otter, Bobcat, or American Alligator may make a surprise cameo appearance.
